How do I stop my wholesale orders from affecting my DTC stock levels?

For merchants running separate wholesale and DTC Shopify stores, Syncio's Synced Stock Buffer feature is the most direct way to stop wholesale orders from depleting your DTC stock, as it lets you reserve a set quantity that your wholesale store cannot sell against so DTC always has a protected reserve.

The buffer works by holding back the number of units you specify in Syncio, so the connected wholesale store can never sell that reserved quantity regardless of order size.

For merchants with a blended store where both channels share a single admin, Shopify has no native equivalent to this feature, so a third-party inventory management app with channel-level stock allocation would be needed instead.

Deep dive

Why does wholesale inventory bleed into DTC stock?

Wholesale inventory bleeds into DTC stock because both channels draw from the same inventory pool with no separation between them. When a wholesale order reduces available stock, DTC customers immediately see less inventory available to purchase. On separate stores without a real-time inventory sync, stock levels can also fall out of alignment after orders are placed, making it possible to oversell the same units across wholesale and DTC channels simultaneously.

How do I actually set up the stock buffer in Syncio?

Set up Syncio's Synced Stock Buffer through your source store's Syncio account. For this specific use case, where you want to protect DTC stock from wholesale orders, your DTC store should be the source store in Syncio.

Navigate to Product Settings in your DTC store's Syncio dashboard, click the Variant tab, and toggle the Synced Stock Buffer ON. Enter the number of units you want to hold as a reserve, and that quantity will be permanently held back from your connected wholesale store, which can only sell what remains above the buffer.

How much buffer stock should I set aside?

The right buffer depends on how much DTC stock you want protected at any given time and how large your typical wholesale orders are. As a starting point, set your buffer to at least your average DTC daily sales volume, which helps ensure wholesale orders can never fully deplete what retail customers need on any given day.

Syncio's Synced Stock Buffer applies the same quantity globally across every synced product, so choose a number that works across your full catalogue rather than optimising for a single SKU.

What happens to wholesale if DTC sells out - does wholesale automatically stop selling too?

Yes, when your DTC store is set as the source store in Syncio and sells out, Syncio automatically updates your connected wholesale store’s stock to zero, preventing wholesale from selling inventory that no longer exists. If you have Syncio's Synced Stock Buffer activated, wholesale stops selling before DTC fully sells out. Once remaining DTC stock drops to the buffer level, the wholesale store shows zero available while DTC retains its protected reserve.

Does the buffer apply to all my products or can I set it per product?

Syncio's Synced Stock Buffer applies globally across all your synced product variants, not per individual product. This means the number you set applies as the reserve quantity for every synced product, so it's worth choosing a figure that works reasonably well across your full catalogue rather than optimising for any single SKU. You can update the buffer quantity at any time in Syncio's Product Settings and Syncio will apply your latest setting within 24 hours.
