Quick overview

  • Shopify Collective only works for Shopify stores, leaving WooCommerce merchants looking for alternatives.
  • Syncio Marketplace gives WooCommerce stores the same collaborative commerce capabilities, plus access to both Shopify and WooCommerce partner stores.

If you're running a WooCommerce store, you might be feeling some FOMO from not being able to access Shopify Collective.

It's a platform that lets stores collaborate, share inventory, and expand their sales channels – but it's locked to Shopify stores only.

Here's the thing: you don't actually need Shopify Collective to build those kinds of partnerships. WooCommerce stores have alternatives that let you cross-sell your products on other stores (even those on Shopify!) or source supply from partner brands.

This guide covers what Shopify Collective actually does, why WooCommerce can't access it, and the alternative that gives you the same collaborative commerce capabilities – without switching platforms.

What is Shopify Collective?

Shopify Collective is a marketplace built into Shopify where stores can find each other and form partnerships.

DTC brands can use it to cross-sell their products on dropship or retailer stores, giving them instant access to new audiences without the cost of customer acquisition. Dropshippers and retailers can use it to discover suppliers they can stock or dropship from, letting them test new products without the risk of holding inventory upfront.

What makes Shopify Collective appealing?

Shopify Collective has gained popularity because it's free to join, works for suppliers and retailers alike, and offers automations that make it easy to manage collaborations. It's a growth channel that doesn't require ad spend or building new infrastructure.

For Shopify merchants, it's a straightforward way to find collaboration opportunities without leaving their existing platform.

Can WooCommerce stores access Shopify Collective?

No. As the name suggests, Shopify Collective can only be used by stores with an active Shopify plan. So you cannot use Shopify Collective on a WooCommerce/WordPress store. If you're running on WooCommerce, you're locked out entirely.

This isn't a technical limitation you can work around – it's a deliberate platform restriction. Shopify built Collective to keep merchants in their ecosystem, and they have little incentive to open it up to WooCommerce stores.

Is there a Shopify Collective alternative for WooCommerce?

Yes, there is a Shopify Collective-style plugin for WooCommerce called Syncio

Within the Syncio app, there is a marketplace feature that operates  almost identically to Shopify Collective, but it works across both WooCommerce and Shopify stores.

Syncio Marketplace is home to over 3,000 quality online stores actively looking to collaborate – brands seeking retail partners, retailers looking for unique products to stock, and stores of all types wanting to expand their reach through strategic partnerships.

Beyond matching the core Shopify Collective features, Syncio includes safety stock buffers to prevent overselling, full control over which product details sync (including custom pricing and shipping rates), automatic commission calculations, and smarter search filters to find relevant partners faster. It's not just an alternative – in many ways, it's more flexible.

Why this matters for WooCommerce stores

For WooCommerce stores, Syncio Marketplace levels the playing field. You're not locked out of collaborative commerce just because you chose WordPress over Shopify.

We built Syncio with the vision that businesses grow faster when they work together. Since 2017, we've been syncing products across stores, helping merchants collaborate seamlessly. The marketplace is an extension of that vision, and it's designed to work regardless of which platform you're on.

Syncio Marketplace in action

"A lot of us in the e-commerce space are smaller businesses trying to compete against much bigger players. When small brands can come together to support each other and form thoughtful partnerships, it can be transformative for our growth” - Pascal Keane, Niccolo P. Read their story.
“Through Syncio Marketplace, we’ve connected with incredible online retailers that share our values and target a similar audience." - Gavin Taylor, Dot & Lola. Read their story.
“We've had several marketplaces reach out and add our products to their stores through Syncio Marketplace. Now, a large portion of our business is through dropshipping, which works out great for us (and the partner).” - Lynn Power, MASAMI. Read their story.

How does Syncio Marketplace work?

Just like Shopify Collective, Syncio Marketplace is a directory of store profiles that you can search and browse though. The only difference is that those stores can run on either Shopify or Woo, as long as they use Syncio.

Each profile shows product images, categories, and locations. When you find a store that looks like a good fit, click 'invite to connect'. Once they accept, you can sync inventory between your stores in a few clicks.

There's no limit to how many stores you can connect with. Some merchants use it to find one strategic partner. Others build networks of dozens of collaborators across different niches and regions.

How to use Syncio Marketplace as a WooCommerce store (step-by-step guide)

Step one: Install the Syncio plugin

You can install the plugin for free here, or access it by searching for ‘Syncio’ in the Plugins tab of your WP admin dashboard.

Step two: Set up your marketplace profile

Now you can begin the quick onboarding steps within the Syncio app. You’ll be asked what you’d like to use Syncio for:

  • Share products and inventory
  • Import products to sell
  • Sync across your own stores
  • Discover suppliers and retailers on Syncio Marketplace (choose this one)

If you choose the last option, you’ll be prompted to create your Syncio Marketplace profile. You can select up to 6 images. Make sure they accurately showcase your store. Add your store’s name, primary product category, website URL and location.

Step three: Start searching

Now you’re all set up to use Syncio, here’s the fun part. Browse through Syncio Marketplace by entering key words and product categories in the search bar. Make sure you’ve set the marketplace to the right mode (product or store) depending on what you’re looking for.

Step four: Get the conversation started

When you find a store that looks promising, click 'invite to connect' under their profile. Send a thoughtful message explaining why you think a partnership makes sense. Be specific – mention what caught your eye about their products or audience, and how you envision working together.

Step five: Connect and start selling

Once a store accepts your connection request, you can start importing their products to sell in your store, or supplying your products to sell in theirs.

Syncio handles the technical side: real-time inventory syncing, automated order routing, and commission tracking. You focus on the relationship and the strategy. It's designed to be as hands-off as possible once you're set up.

Ready to collaborate?

Syncio Marketplace gives you the same partnership opportunities, automated inventory management, and access to stores across both Shopify and WooCommerce. You're not boxed into one ecosystem, and you're not locked out of a truly effective growth strategy.
